Pupil return to school information

6th August 2020

Dear Parent / Carer

School reopening – Wednesday 12th August onwards

Last week our Executive Director of Education, Maureen McKenna, issued a letter to all parents/carers following the confirmation by the Scottish Government that all schools would reopen fully to young people in August.  Having consulted with our Parent Council representatives we are pleased to outline the details for the return of pupils to Hyndland Secondary. The guidance leaflet attached to this letter will outline, in detail, some of the measures that we have put in place for our young people returning to our school from Wednesday 12th August onwards.  This letter will outline the details of our arrangements for the first week of school.

Whilst I’m sure the reopening of school will come as a relief to the vast majority of parents/carers there will be nonetheless, a degree of anxiety amongst some pupils and parents/carers about a full return to school next week.  The attached leaflet outlines important information related to the following;

  1. What to do if you child is feeling unwell with suspected COVID-19 symptoms
  2. Procedures for staggered start times and entrance/exit of the school campus
  3. Details of the school’s one-way system
  4. Procedures to be followed in class by all pupils
  5. Details of how the school will stagger intervals and reduce social times

The details of this leaflet will be explained to young people upon their return to school but we would also ask if families could spend some time familiarising themselves with the contents of the leaflet at home in advance of returning to school next week, and that the leaflet is retained for reference purposes.

Arrangements for next week

We recognise that for many young people, returning to school after five months away may be challenging.  There are a range of new procedures that they will have to get used to, such as navigating the new one-way system that will be operating within the school.  The layout of classrooms may look differently for young people as well as how young people will learn and interact with teachers.

To ensure that pupils become familiar with these adaptations, we will run an induction session for all year groups as detailed below.  During this time, key staff including members of the Pastoral Care and wider Pupil Support Team, will work closely with young people in their House Group to help ensure they feel both safe and confident being back in the building.  The induction will include a physical walk-around the building to help ensure our young people are confident with the new one-way system.

The induction session will also provide the school with a valuable opportunity to allow our students to reconnect with support staff as well as students within their class.  Young people will also be given the opportunity to ask any questions or raise any concerns with support staff about their return.

Wednesday 12th August

S1 students will attend school from 9.00am until 11.00am.  S1 students should congregate in the playground where support staff will meet them and direct them to the allocated classroom.  All S1 students will undertake their induction programme during this time.

S6 students will attend school from 1.00pm until 3.00pm.  They should enter via the main pupil entrance on Lauderdale Gardens where there will be signage directing them to their House group classroom.   During this time S6 will undertake their induction programme and will also receive important information regarding re-coursing of subjects and post exam results SQA communication.

Thursday 13th August

S4 students will attend school from 9.00am until 11.00am.   They should enter via the main pupil entrance on Lauderdale Gardens where there will be signage directing them to their House group classroom.   During this time S4 will undertake their induction programme.

S5 students will attend school from 1.00pm until 3.00pm.  They should enter via the main pupil entrance on Lauderdale Gardens where there will be signage directing them to their House group classroom.   During this time S5 will undertake their induction programme and will also receive important information regarding re-coursing of subjects and post exam results SQA communication.

Friday 14th August

S3 students will attend school from 9.00am until 11.00am.   They should enter via the main pupil entrance on Lauderdale Gardens where there will be signage directing them to their House group classroom.   During this time S3 will undertake their induction programme and any outstanding S3 coursing will be completed.

S2 students will attend school from 1.00pm until 3.00pm.  They should enter via the Airlie building entrance located in the playground.  Signage will be displayed to direct the students to their allocated House group classroom.

There will be an opportunity for enhanced support during these three days for young people requiring additional support.

Monday 17th August

All students will attend full time.  S1-S4 students will start at 8.45am with S5-S6 student starting at 9.00am.

I hope the information above and on the attached leaflet is informative for you and provides some reassurance that the measures we are taking are appropriate in ensuring the school is as safe for pupils and staff as it can be.

We very much look forward to welcoming back all our young people to Hyndland Secondary School and look forward to another successful school year ahead.    I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents/carers and wider school community for their support over the past five months during these unprecedented times.

Yours sincerely

L Edgerton – Head Teacher
