S4 Practice Prelim Assessment Diet

Dear S4 Parent/Carer and S4 learner

S4 PRACTICE PRELIM ASSESSMENT DIET - NOVEMBER 2020

I am writing to provide you details of the planned upcoming formal assessment diet which we intend to run with our S4 students during the week beginning 9th November and 16th November.    All young people will sit one formal assessment during their normal timetabled class for each subject during this two week period.  We will provide all S4 learners and families with a copy of the timetable which will detail the date of each subject as well as an indication of what is likely to be involved in the assessment.  We have carefully balanced the assessments over the two weeks to ensure that young people are not overburdened on any particular day of the two week period.

The reason behind these formal assessments is to help support and prepare our young people for their formal diet of prelims which will take place towards the end of February.  As you will be aware, learners in S4 missed out on the valuable opportunity to sit S3 exams in May due to the school closure, so we are keen to give our young people an experience which will be similar to their prelim diet of timetabled exams within a two week period.

The evidence gathered from this formal assessment diet will allow staff to continue to track young peoples’ progress during the year which will ultimately help to inform estimates for SQA certification.

We will provide feedback to parents following this formal assessment diet so that families have an updated record of performance following the first tracking exercise shared in September.

As an S4 learner, how can I prepare for these assessments?

Your class teacher will give you lots of advice but please remember to make use of the study skills materials which you were issued with during S4 core study period.   Make flash cards or mind maps or even complete SQA past paper questions at home.  Remember your teacher can mark these for you.  All SQA past papers and marking instructions can be found on www.sqa.org.uk

What will these assessments be used for?

These assessments are part of a wider gathering of evidence exercise being completed by teachers this year to track the progress of young people’s attainment.  We will then share these results with both learners and their families.  Please do not worry about these assessments – these assessments are in place to support your learning and to help you identify on-going next steps in learning.
