Top Ten Study Tips

1.        Know your course well. Spend time making a checklist of topic areas by going through your materials or any course overviews provided by your teachers. Ask your teacher for help if you have any gaps.

2.         Make a study plan.   If you have a clear plan you can set aside a clear number of hours for every subject and then allocate time to topics within subjects.

3.         Effective revision. Studying for shorter periods of time with regular breaks can help with concentration. Start with half hour sessions and build up from there. Don’t just read over notes you already have. Try to summarise, highlight, create mind maps, bullet point key ideas etc. Actively involve yourself in the process.

4.         What works for you? Use strategies which suit your learning style. Breaking topicsinto chunks, using key words, using images, mnemonics, rhymes, colour coding etc can all help you with your studies.

5.         Using past papers. Past papers can be used to help familiarise yourself with the layout of the exam and with the type of questions you will face. Use these questions to plan out responses, to highlight key words and to ensure you understand how to make any answer relevant to the question asked.

6.         Motivation. Once you start your confidence in what you know will grow. Looking back on what you have covered helps increase motivation and remove the stress from the process. The important thing is getting started!

7.         Don’t leave it too late. Make a plan and stick to it as best you can. Start as early as possible and keep your eye on the final exam . . . it will all be over soon.

8.         Working together. Consider forming a study group with other students to help support on-going study . . . but don’t let it become an excuse to avoid studying.

9.         Additional support out of school. Use electronic resources such as the SQA website, BBC Bitsize Revision, SCHOLAR, where appropriate.

10.       Additional support in school. You will have the opportunity to take part in supported study activities and Spring revision. Make sure you take advantage of such opportunities and target subjects where you will benefit most from additional help.
