Course Description: Standard Grade

SQA Standard Grade courses take place over 3 periods a week, over two years. There are three main areas to each course:

·         Design Activity

·         Expressive Activity

·         Critical Activity

Students are asked to complete a Practical Design Unit and a Practical Expressive Unit as follows:

Practical Design

Negotiate and finalise a design brief:

·         Undertake a substantial investigation of the brief resulting in research and investigation work covering up to 3 A2 sheets

·         Consider possible solutions resulting in development work covering up to 3 A2 sheets

·         Final Outcome; one A2 sheet showing the solution

The final task will be to review and evaluate the design process in terms of the design brief; this will result in a completed evaluation.

Practical Expressive

Identify a theme in an area such as Still Life, Portraiture or Built Environment.

·         Undertake a substantial investigation of the theme resulting in research and investigation work covering up to 3 A2 sheets

·         Develop personal ideas resulting in development work covering up to 3 A2 sheets

·         Present a final outcome - one A2 sheet showing the solution

Critical Activity

Alongside the practical work students will be asked to develop ideas and opinions on the work of artists and designers – this will take the form of 2 written presentations (one on design and one on expressive art), which will be forwarded to the SQA for assessment.

Assessment

Internal assessment will take place for the areas listed above. Assessment is continuous. All assessments have to be passed to complete the course.

Exams

5 hour practical exam for expressive activity

Homework

Regular homework. Pupils are expected to extend their course work by doing work in their own time, which will be set throughout the session.

Courses available in S5 / S6

Intermediate 2, Higher and Advanced Higher

Careers

Recommended for Fine Art degree courses, Architectural degree courses, and all design and media courses, including photography, graphic design, fashion/textile design, computer based design, interior design etc. Can also be useful in primary teaching and nursery work.
