COURSE DESCRIPTION
 
The Standard Grade Business Management course is designed so that students will acquire knowledge and understanding of the role and operation of business and develop skills in decision-making and practical abilities by applying this knowledge within the prescribed areas of study. The course adopts an integrated approach to the 3 elements - Knowledge and Understanding, Decision Making and Practical Abilities. 
 
AREAS OF STUDY
 
There are 4 areas of study –
 
·         What is business?
  • How do businesses develop and perform?
  • What resources do businesses use?
  • How are businesses managed?
 
These areas are covered in the most common functional business areas namely Marketing, Human Resources, Operations and Finance.
 
ASSESSMENT
 
Both Knowledge and Understanding and Decision Making are assessed externally at the end of the second year of the course in the main SQA diet. 
 
Practical Abilities is assessed internally using a contemporary business simulation issued by SQA in the final year of the course and assesses Business Management skills acquired in the course by demonstrating the ability
 
·         to use information to make decisions
·         to communicate findings
 
 
HOMEWORK
 
Pupils should expect regular written homework, completing work begun in class and/or supporting work done in class and also some preparatory research.
 
COURSES AVAILABLE IN S5/6
 
This course leads directly into Higher Still Business Management at Higher and Intermediate levels as well as Advanced Higher.
 
CAREERS AVAILABLE
 
Many university courses are available, for those interested in working in companies as managers and it is also useful if pupils are thinking of a career in any business related subject i.e. Accountancy or Law.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
 
Standard Grade Administration is set in the context of the modern business environment. Throughout the course pupils learn how to work effectively by integrating their knowledge and skills to solve administrative problems.
Administration focuses on the ways in which information is accessed, processed and communicated in the business environment through the use of ICT. Throughout the course pupils are encouraged to produce work to the standard of accuracy, quality and presentation required to provide a finished article that is fit for the purpose as would be expected in business.
 
AREAS OF STUDY
 
ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT
 
This area covers the functions of departments, types of offices, reception services, mail handling, purposes of filing, reprographics, meetings and travel arrangements,
 
INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
 
This area covers the practical skills and techniques used to support business administration through the use of a variety of business software applications such as word processing, databases, spreadsheets, e-mail and the Internet.
 
ASSESSMENT
 
All elements are assessed externally. 
Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving are assessed by an external examination at the end of the course in the main SQA diet
 
Practical Abilities is assessed by a project covering the practical skills used during the course. The project is both issued and marked by the SQA but is done during class time in S4.
 
HOMEWORK
 
Pupils are given regular written exercises to back up class work or give more practice in certain areas such as problem solving. It will be an essential part of the course and will be given on a weekly basis.
 
COURSES AVAILABLE IN S5/6
 
This course has been designed to lead directly into Higher Still Administration at Higher and Intermediate levels.
 
CAREERS INFORMATION
 
Any career in Business Administration itself but will also provide the ICT skills and knowledge useful for further education or for any job.
