The course is designed to help pupils develop:

 

·         A conceptual understanding of the past and an ability to think independently

 

·         A range of skills including the ability to apply a detailed historical perspective in a range of contexts

 

·         A detailed understanding of the factors contributing to, and the impact of, historical events

 

·         The skills of investigating historical events and on the basis of evidence, forming views the skills of explaining historical events, and drawing reasoned conclusions

 

 

Assessment and course structure

In order to achieve National 4 or 5 standard pupils will be required to meet a number of standards and will be assessed throughout the year.

1.   Unit assessments after every topic

2.   Completion of an Added Value unit (N4) and completion of an Assignment (N5) – researched at home and written under timed conditions

Pupils will be given a final exam SQA worth 60 marks (N5) 

 

 

The History Course

Pupils Study and will be examined on three Historical Units;

1.   Scotland and The Great War 1910-1928

(evaluating historical sources taking into account their origin, purpose, content and/or context)

2.   ‘Free at Last’ – Civil Rights in the USA

(explaining the impact of a historical development in a structured manner)

3.   The Making of Modern Britain 1850-1950

(analysing the factors contributing towards a historical development, drawing a reasoned conclusion)
