Hyndland News (old)
November 2013

Welcome to the November edition of the Hyndland News giving highlights of some of the events which took place over the past month in Hyndland Secondary School and giving details of some of our forthcoming Christmas activities.

Congratulation to our girls’ rugby team – they were well deserved winners of the Glasgow and West of Scotland schools winter 7’s Competition.  Well done!!  Our Bar Mock pupils put on a sterling performance in the High Court on Saturday, 16th November 2013 but unfortunately never made it through to the final this year.  They should still be very proud of their efforts and most of all for their team spirit and support of each other.

S5-6 Parents’ Evening was very well supported.  The S4 Assessment Period begins on Thursday, 5th December 2013 and pupils have full details for their exams.  Information for parents’ / carers’ is available on the website.

As Christmas approaches we have a number of musical events arranged.  The Christmas Concert takes place in Hyndland Parish Church on Tuesday 10th December 2013 at 7.00pm and on Wednesday 11th December at 7.30pm we have Carols by Candlelight also in Hyndland Parish Church.  Our Christmas Service will take place on Thursday 19th December 2013 in Hyndland Parish Church at 2.00pm.  S6 pupils are also organising a Christmas Ceilidh for S5-6 pupils on the 5th December 2013 and our annual Christmas Talent show is taking place on Wednesday, 18th December 2013 at 7.00pm in the Airlie Theatre – always a very entertaining evening!

We also have our annual appeal for non-perishable foodstuffs which is to be donated to the White Inch Food bank.  Donations can be placed in the box at the school entrance and we ask that you support this appeal.  If all pupils donate even one can of food then we could make a large difference to our community.  Please donate if you are able.

We hope that you join us over the coming weeks at one of the many events organised.

The Christmas food collection this year is for Whiteinch Foodbank.  There will be a box outside the janitors office for all food collections.

Pantomime Theatre News

All S1 tickets to see ‘Aladdin’ at the Kings’ Theatre on Thursday 12th December have been sold, in fact we over-sold, but  managed to secure ten more last minute tickets. I’m afraid however that there are now no more tickets available, although  we do have 130 pupils booked to go who can all look forward to some panto season fun, along with a free ice cream!

S2 panto tickets for the Tron Theatre’s ‘Peterpan and Stinkerbell’, on the morning of Tuesday 17th December, are about to go on sale at a cost of £10 per ticket. Consent forms and letters will be issued very soon - oh yes they will!

“It’s A Wonderful Life” at the GFT

Date and time: Tuesday, December 17th, 17:00-20:00

Cost: £5.00

On Tuesday, December 17th, we are going to the GFT to see an evening screening of “It’s A Wonderful Life”. All S5 and S6 pupils are invited to attend, but there are limited spaces.

Please note: this is a change of date. We were originally planning to attend on Wednesday the 18th, but the booking has been brought forward to accommodate our school talent show on Wednesday the 18th.

If you are happy for your child to come see this Christmas classic, please encourage them to collect a permission form from Mr Johnston as soon as possible

   The Lion King

Forty S3 and S4 students travelled through to Edinburgh on Wednesday 27th November to enjoy a performance of Disney’s The Lion King. It was a great afternoon and staff and student alike had a ‘roaring’ good time.

Eco School News

The Eco Schools group have achieved our bronze award and are now just awaiting the arrival of our certificate to make it official. The group has been working hard on designing plans for a garden in the playground and representatives will be meeting with the head teacher and Amey manager Martin Whyte to discuss how these plans can be put into action. The group will also present these plans to the Parent Council on the 5th December to gain their support.

The Eco Schools group is also excited to be involved in helping with the development of Old Station Park through planting an orchard and bulbs for Spring.

There was a full committee meeting on the 26th of November at 2:20pm in the library to discuss waste management, the garden, fundraising and community links.

The Eco Group will also  be organising a litter pick-up week from Wednesday 11th – Tuesday 17th of December.  This will be an opportunity for the Houses to earn a significant number of points.  House Captains to give more detail.

The group also will be collecting old tinsel, unwanted Christmas decorations and wire hangers, and will be running a ‘Christmas Craft Club’ in the last two weeks of school.  Please send any donations to Hyndland Secondary room A102.  All funds raised will go towards the development of the school garden

Children in need

A MASSIVE thank-you to everyone who contributed and helped to make Friday 22ND November a wonderful day.

There are too many people to thank individually, but the House Captains did an exceptional job as did Mr Higgins arranging the Battle of the Houses, also the home baking and raffle prizes were awesome! Thanks for your contribution

Well done to everyone who took part in Staff Vs Pupil football (even if the Ref was a little one-sided!)

The events on the day went without a hitch and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, which was exactly what we were hoping for.

Through all the enjoyment, it’s important to remember the cause we were raising money for children in need, Hyndland is over the moon to let you all know we raised a grand total of

Dance success

The success of the senior dance team, Fierce Fusion and S2 cheerleaders at Glasgow’s Got Moves on 28th November.

Fierce Fusion competed against 8 street dance teams in the Glasgow North West category and were absolutely amazing. They have yet to find out if they have made the finals but they did extremely well. The cheerleaders showcased their performance on the night and were the only cheerleading team on the night. Feedback they received from other schools was great and they should be very proud.

Public Speaking Success

Congratulations to Hamish Geddes in S5 who recently competed in the 1st round of the Glasgow Speakers Club Schools Competition with a speech entitled “The Dawkins Delusion”.  He confidently went through to the final which will be held in Glasgow City Chambers on the 2nd of November.

He was coached to within an inch of his life by a team of his peers who also deserve a wee mention for giving up quite a few lunchtimes to hear him prepare. They are:

  • Callum Abbot
  • Catherine Clements.
  • Amy Rollo
  • Qasim Ali
  • Flora Makin

Advanced Higher French pupils

A group of S6 Advanced Higher pupils participated in EUROSCOLA. The pupils visited the European Parliament in Strasbourg where they were given the opportunity to experience the culture and tourism of this dynamic and traditional French town.  Students from all the member state counties of the European Union were represented. Pupils were given a unique opportunity to experience EU decision making in the form of a multilingual European Youth Parliament.

Hyndland Secondary’s Advanced Higher French pupils participated in debates, (speaking only in French!), as well as voting and adopting resolutions on real European issues.
